Ah, So That Was What Bellows' Vibrators Were

Vibrators

Sir, – I’m pretty sure that the “vibrators” Saul Bellow saw displayed in Illinois shop windows in 1960 (see Then and Now, October 31) were not what we think of as vibrators today. I would bet that what he had in mind was the kind of machine my grandparents had in their basement – a thing you stood on, then put a strap around your middle, then pulled the switch, and it supposedly shook the fat off your midriff.
