After Rice, Olmert Takes on Ehud Barak

Olmert aides blast Barak for comments backing Gaza truce

Officials close to outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert blasted Defense Minister Ehud Barak for comments quoted Wednesday in Haaretz in support of a week-long "humanitarian cease-fire" in the Gaza Strip.

"The remarks constitute a lack of national responsibility," the officials said. "Ministers speaking to the media about the conduct of the war touching on cease-fire initiatives are very grave."

The political sources added that, "Hamas sees the scenes and hears the voices - and these comments are a shot in the arm for Hamas and its leaders."

Senior officials close to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed veiled criticism at Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday for his backing of Egypt's truce efforts conducted via Defense Ministry Security-Diplomatic Bureau chief Amos Gilad.

"Hamas senior officials see these images and hear these voices and draw encouragement from the notion that Israel is looking for a way out. We regret the irresponsibility of ministers leaking information regarding their own private initiatives - as high ranking as these ministers may be," officials said.

So, the "wars of the Jews" begin.

And, again, we will see how the politicians will snatch defeat from the real possibility of a major victory over the terror entity in Gaza. The talks may go on for a few days but the way it looks now, the weakness of those up on high is becoming more apparent.

Does this mean Benjamin Netanyahu can forge ahead in the upcoming electoral campaign, pointing out the hesitation and unwillingness to disregard false accusations and diplomatic pressure of the Kadima and Labor party leaders?

We will wait and blog on.
