A Note on Olive Tree Burning

A note I received from someone who received it from Spain:

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Dear Yisrael,

...Our ancestors planted thousands of acres, tens of thousands of vessanes (dunams) of olive trees. We know this issue.

...I can assure you that an olive tree lasts at least three days to burn completely.

Yours,

A

So, next time you read of an olive-tree burning incident, give it a second thought.

the "olive trees" most often mentioned in these media reports are actually saplings, which are usually uprooted and often stolen, not burned. a real, adult olive tree, properly lit, would go up like a torch- they're full of oil. that's why olive is the most coveted (and expensive) wood for woodstoves. i don't know about 3 days, maybe for a big one, but this rarely happens. if it did i'd like to see it. :)
