HU YIVARECH – A SONG FOR THE IDF SOLDIERS

• Lyrics by DOV
• Hebrew text from prayer recited on Shabbat Mornings

A mother sitting by the phone, she’s scared and tired, she feels alone. Her only son is serving on the line. And as she waits, she cries out loud. She prays that he’s o.k., her child. The world joins in this prayer for him in time.

Oh Hashem, protect our men in arms. As they defend our land, shield them from harm. Hu yivarech et chayalei tzavah hagana l’Yisroel, Hu Yivarech.

A boy looks out at his front yard – a passing jeep filled with guards. And he knows he’s not much younger than these men. Some day soon he will be called to defend his country that he loves. And the world joins him in prayer again for them.

Oh Hashem, protect our men in arms. As they defend our land, shield them from harm. Hu yivarech et chayalei tzavah hagana l’Yisroel, Hu yivarech.

Ha’omdim al mishmar artzeinu, al mishmar artzeinu v’arei elokeinu, Hu Yivarech et Chalei tzavah.

Oh Hashem, protect our men in arms. As they defend our land, shield them from harm. Hu yivarech et chayalei tzavah hagana l’Yisroel, Hu yivarech.

40% of IDF soldiers who "fell" last year committed suicide or were shot by other IDF soldiers. Why are so many IDF soldiers suicidal?

"so many suicidal"? it's 2% dummy. and if you are taking stats from maxie B., consider that if most of the suicides are Ethiopians and the reason is racism, then they'd face racisim also outisde of the Army (not to mention the high rate of Ethiopian murders/suicides of married couples which has nothing to do with the IDF.

Also consider a study that found: "About 90% of all suicides in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF), a mandatory population-based army drafting all youth ages 18-21, during 2003-2005 were firearm suicides. Since many IDF soldiers go home on the weekends, the IDF changed its weapons policy in 2006 to require that firearms remain on base when soldiers take a weekend leave. After this policy change, the total suicide rate in the IDF decreased by 40% in 2007-2008". so a little prevention goes a long way. See: Lubin G, Werbeloff N et al. Decrease in Suicide Rates After a Change of Policy Reducing Access to Firearms in Adolescents: A Naturalistic Epidemiological Study. Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior 2010;40(5):421-424.

But a better question is how come so many Arabs in the Middle east are killed by their rulers, their police, their security services and now the preferred weapons are shells from tanks and cannons?

The rate of suicide has risen dramatically in Saudi Arabia, nearly doubling from 400 cases in 1999 to 787 cases in 2010, according to the Mideast news agency Ansamed. The real rate is thought to be higher, as experts believe many families cover up suicides in order to avoid scandal.

Suicide is particularly common among young people, especially unmarried women. Eighty percent of attempted suicides were attributed to women, with domestic violence, parents' preference for boys, and arranged marriages listed as the primary reason girls gave for suicide attempts.

Consider:

Syrian tanks have been shelling Homs, the country's third largest city, as a nationwide crackdown on antigovernment protests continues. The residential district of Bab Amro reportedly came under attack in the early hours of this morning.
Towns around Daraa, the southern city at the center of the protests, have reportedly been raided. A western suburb of Damascus has been cut off completely by government forces. Thousands of demonstrators have reportedly been arrested. Despite the crackdown, reports indicate that some demonstrations are continuing throughout the country.
Syrian opposition groups say between 600 and 800 people have been killed since demonstrations began in March.

Would you rather be an Arab in Israedl, on either side of the Green Line or an Arab in Syria, or in Libya, or in Egypt, or in Yemen, or in Tunisia, or in Bahrain, or in Algeria?
