UPI Recycles Ideological Extremists

From a recent UPI report on the influence of right-wing Orthodox Jews in the Israeli armed forces:-

The infiltration (!) of the military by religious zealots (!) has been under way for three decades. Much of the officer corps -- up to 30 percent by some estimates -- consists of men from extremist religious groups.

Some army units, including elite combat units, are entirely made up of religious soldiers, many of them from West Bank settlements.

"We've reached the point where a critical mass of religious soldiers is trying to negotiate with the army about how and for what purpose military force is employed on the battlefield," says Yigal Levy, a political sociologist who has written several books on the Israeli military. He says the growing power of the religious right in the military reflects wider social trends.

That last claim is simply false.

I just blogged about the army brass attempting to use the army to impose social behavior such as singing. What has that to do with any battlefield?

Yigal Levy is an extremist whose activities have been followed.

But that exact quote is from 2009!!!

Here:

“We have reached the point where a critical mass of religious soldiers is trying to negotiate with the army about how and for what purpose military force is employed on the battlefield,” said Yigal Levy, a political sociologist at the Open University who has written several books on the Israeli army.

Is UPI recycling ideological trash? Old ideological trash?
