In The Wall

The 15th verse in the book of Joshua 2 reads:

Then she let them down by a cord through the window; for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

The "she" therein is Rahab who aids the two spies sent by Joshua to gather intelligence on Jericho.

However, the Hebrew is more specific:

כִּי בֵיתָהּ בְּקִיר הַחוֹמָה, וּבַחוֹמָה הִיא יוֹשָׁבֶת.

and translate more properly as "for her house is in the wall, for in the wall she sits".

How can anyone reside in a wall?

Take a look:

Canaanite-period walls were actually two sides with fill-in.  In Shiloh, where I photographed this picture, you can see that at some point, the fill was removed and rooms were constructed.

So, the Biblical narrative isn't fanciful but supported by archaeological finds.
